Prototype: First Playable

Source: Myself

For my project this week, I worked on getting my character moving around the terrain and testing that out with the "on ground" feature that was discussed in our Unity tutorial 3 and put into our C# script . We had the player, jump and move that is what I wanted to mainly focus on and this was a difficult task and I had to go over the tutorials again just to be sure but I got it working in the end!

My character's view will be first person in my game so I had to add a FPS controller to the player , I had to get one from the assets store off Unity, adding the main camera to the player was and angling it so it was attached above the character's body was quite easy; getting the camera to move with the player was ever more difficult. These videos provided me with great help into attaching my FPS controller and camera to my character!

  1. Hi Aaron!
I've just finished reading your posts about your project and I'm really impressed well done :) I really like your idea, I think it's cool that your game was inspired by lord of the rings (even though I have never seen the movies, maybe I'll give then a go one day) and I'm excited to see how it turns out in the end. You seem to be making great progress and your terrain in your other post looks so good, its actually so realistic looking!! Wishing you the best of luck continuing on with your project and everything else this year, thankfully were getting close to Christmas and we'll all actually get a break soon :)

  2. Hey Aaron, glad to hear you got the player and camera to work now! It was also a good idea to attach the links to the tutorials you used as they can help other people with similar issues, I might even need to use the tutorial on attaching the camera so thanks in advance! Looking forward to seeing what you added to the game!

  3. Hi Aaron,
Great to see your attempt on your prototype and first playable, I can see you had a touch time adding a FPS controller to the player but I am glad you managed to pull it off, fair play.
I think going back to the tutorial or trying to find a tutorial that can help is a great move as this year is our first time using Unity. Anyway best of luck finishing your game.

  4. Hi Aaron, I read your posts about your project and I really like your idea. I love the lord of the rings movies and the setting of your game is looking great. It's good to see that you have been referring to past tutorials that we've looked at, they're very beneficial in that way. I'm glad that you got the player moving even if it did take some time to do. Glad to hear that you found some useful tutorials to help you also. Good luck with finishing your game!

  5. Hi Aaron
If your players design is anything to go by then your game will have a vary interesting enverment. I hand trouble when I was trying to get my character to jump for some reason the "on the ground" box would not tune back on when I landed and I could only jump that one time so I can image some of the complications.
As for adding the first person camera sound difficult I'm geassing its not as simple as making the camera a child of the player. Hope it didn't take you to long.

Introduction

My name is Aaron Mulholland, I am 19 years old and I'm in my second year of college in TU Dublin doing Creative Digital Media. The module in which I'm doing this blog is for Multimedia Development 1 and I hope to pass this.... hopefully XD.  Before heading into TU Dublin I first went to a PLC in Dunboyne and did the exact same course I'm doing now; after completing my year there I decided I wanted to take a career in the art of designing on computers as I heard many positives about this chosen career especially in the money ! Technological University Dublin (TUD) logo   The hardest part of my first year occurred during the Lockdown during the early stages of Covid-19 when I was in my second semester. It was a tough time for work and trying to work at home and online with limited resources such as cameras, adobe software and the Mac's that the college provided which was where I did most of my work for the modules and to move from that to my Windows laptop was very diffi...

Games GDD

A game design document or GDD is basically the design brief before the development of a game this will include the following: 1. A summary of what the game is about. 2. A description of the layout of the game. 3. Who is the games target audience e.g. kids, teenagers, adults. 4. Where the game is set e.g. in space, another planet etc. 5. The controls and mechanics of the game. 6. What platform it will be used on PC, XBOX, Playstation. How do you create one Any format is acceptable but depending on the person and how they would like to present it they can use a variety of options such as Microsoft Word , Powerpoint, OpenOffice, Google Docs and any other type of text document. The brief should be very clear as it is not only useful when presenting it but also useful to look back over especially to the designer if they go off track when designing their specific game. My Favorite Game

Main logo for Red Dead Redemption 2 (2019) My Favorite Game that I have ever played since owning a console was Red Dead Redemption 2. This ought to be the best game of the decade and was also voted as the number 1 game of 2019 and has been labeled the best video game of  ALL TIME ! The game was able for all gaming consoles Xbox and PS4 and later came out on PC with a higher FPS and better graphics then the consoles a month later. Although the game itself was popular; many found the game demeaning, sexist and even racist at times but the game was set in the late 19th century where there was many of these acts committed. I guess the company that made the game "Rockstar Games" just wanted to capture what it was like to live during the golden age and end of gunslingers and law-breakers.  You play as Arthur Morgan, a old gunslinger along with his gang of criminals who are running away from the federal police who are keen on killing him and his crew and finally ending the...
